I blacklisted the "snd" driver (after a bit of a struggle), and hibernates seems to work OK, even with the nvidia driver installed. This would explain why a login screen hibernates perfectly, normally fails when I logged in. FYI: The laptop has some other misc problems with volume control etc so I may need to pick another snd driver. Will provide further information when I get a chance to more precisely remove and test the various drivers.
