Sorry about this, but that was a misleading result. After umteen successful s2disk suspends with my Skype workaround, it started happnening again even without Skype running. I guess that'll teach me to pronounce success so strongly when an intermittent problem is involved. :) At any rate, my current fix that is working *so far* is to go back to the non-modesetting intel xorg driver. Again, I only mention this here for documentation purposes. Sorry for the previous Skype noise.
