The exhaust valve is opened at top center of the compression stroke, by
hydraulic action (solenoids and pistons) using the engines lube oil pressure.
The energy required to compress the incoming air charge is then dissipated out
the exhaust and not contributing to any work by burning a fuel/air charge. This
slows down the vehicle (it also makes it loud) Have you ever heard a truck
(lorry) slowing down with Jake brakes? A lot of small towns haves signs
prohibiting Jake brake use during certain hours of the night. :-) Joe.
