Of course that's true, Greg - though not terribly significant. In countries with a parliamentary system (the more common form of representative government), the party or coalition which attains the majority in Parliament gets to choose the head of state - he isn't elected directly. The actual appointment of that head is usually mere formality, however. I doubt that Hindenburg really WANTED the likes of Hitler running things, but he didn't really have a choice once the National Socialists controlled the legislature.
