Hi Grant:

I would be very wary of any filter setup that claims to have 20 and 5
micron filters, yet will allow WVO to pass at less than about 150F.
I'd also have to really wonder, if you are heating the WVO to get it
through, if those filters are really filtering, or if they've torn or
expanded. Why are they lasting longer than the Racor filters? Maybe
because they're not doing the job?

We use a 12/24V gear oil pump and a pair of screen filters - a
pleated metal screen on the inlet, and a second screen that is housed
in the pump itself (in a clear plastic housing, so you can see when it
needs cleaning). Neither of these are "fine micron" filters, but they
do a great job of getting the major bits out, and you can pump oil at
room temperature and not worry about burning out the pump, and pump
quickly.

That (and gravity-settling beforehand) gets it half-decently clean and
fit to put in the tank. Then we use a heated centriugal type
prefilter/water separator and a large, heated 10 micron final filter
(that is rated to 250F). Both those are onboard the vehicle, part of
the "Vormax" filter. This combination of transfer-to-tank prefiltering
and onboard prefilter/water separation/final filtering allows good ease
of use, long filter life, and confidence that the WVO has been properly
filtered by the time it reaches the engine. The combination is not
exactly cheap, but it is worth the money. You get what you pay for, in
filtration. I'd recommend that anyone using WVO look for quality
filtration setups that were intended for this type of material, and
pumps that will move the oil at a decent rate and that will hold up
over time.
