I tried doing a little research on NASCAR and other North American Racing Series Fuels, but don't have time because I just keep running into gobbledy-gook about "blends" http://jayski.thatsracin.com/teams/fuel-sponsor.htm http://www.racingone.com/article.asp?artnum=18828 So while there may well be a great deal of methanol going into these cars, it's not clear to me precisely what the mixtures are. The racing series could make more of an effort to incorporate and use fuels that could play a roll in the US and the world's efforts toward greater sustainability. They could identify different fuels (and technologies) that offer different alleged "pros and cons" toward sustainability and make deliberate use of those fuels and technologies, and attendees of those racing events could watch knowing that research is being done before their eyes. Lord knows they cash in on the Patriotism Angle here and there, and I think they could be of even greater help to the country and the world. It's wrong that many more racing series have not latched on to this idea (though some probably have), and made more effort toward it, in my view. As to a response that they'd be giving away a fraction or more of speed for the sake of a different fuel, give me a break. Most of the top racing series long ago passed the point where they had to make an effort to slow down for the sake of safety, rather than speed up. They have restrictor plates and bans on this and that technology, it seems, just to keep the speeds down for safety. It seems to me that they could get more horsepower if they didn't have to follow their own restrictions. I doubt that some of the fuels which need researching for sustainability and viability would all necessarily be terrible for horsepower.
