Been reading Jared Diamond -- Collapse, How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. I realized something -- as a society "col- lapses", many people become Afraid, and Fear Makes People Stu- pid. So there's actually a failure-promoting tendency as the descent progresses! :-) -K
This failure promoting tendency probably increases the rate of descent as well.
