This applies equally in UK. Our BSI has just issued a draft standard based on the Draft European CEN which is (or appears to be) based upon the German DIN 51606. when standards stack yp like this the end result is often more stringent rules but also more unecessary rigour. There's no doubt that full DIN 51606 compliance means great fuel but is all of the additional effort adding genuine value. If full compliance is needed to get adequate fuel then so be it. But if we are trying to make an over-the-top product, that extra effort is wasteful. Looking at DIN 51606 I wonder if they analysed the best rapeseed biodiesel they could make and then drew up the standard based on the analysis. In the absence of anything already done not a bad idea, but do diesel engines need all those details covered? Can we have some discussion on which parts of DIN 51606 can be safely adjusted (I hesitate to say "watered down")? That way UK, Australia and elsewhere might be able to set up realistic standards, that protect fuel users and allow manufacturers to operate efficiently on waste cooking oils. If the standards are not realistic they risk being ignored. If full compliance with DIN 51606 (or equivalent) is needed then so be it, if not we need to justify the changes. For a start what value do the following add: # Iodine value (CEN limit 120) # Polyunsaturated methyl ester (4 double bonds) (CEN max 1%) # Linolenic acid methyl ester (CEN max 12%) Dave Elliott ------------------------ Yahoo!
