Similar problem here, though I've processed a couple of batches without the seal. The barrels I got had foodstuffs in them, and the seal was a sort of foam that doesn't hold up in methanol fumes. I'm going to try making a continuous rope of the correct circumference (continuous rope = http://www.bhi.co.uk/hints/rope.htm )and coating it with a silicon rubber. Then lay it into the groove, and when the silicone is nearly solid, set the lid onto the barrel to fit the seal. If it works, I'll let you know. :)
