Katie Dombek-Keith, a graduate student in Cornell's school of Fiber Science and Applied Design, has installed an amazing exhibit at the Community School of Music and Arts, 330 East State Street, Ithaca. Dombek-Keith has a very sophisticated approach to clothing that promotes elegant reuse as well as repair and low-impact washing. Her tour-de-force is a wedding gown that is designed to be disassembled and reused in various celebratory ways throughout married and family life. Katie calls it a "dowrey dress" because of its long-lasting value. Other original designs include high-quality jackets, skirts, and pants that can be adjusted for size changes and that easily convert from casual to dressy, allowing one to have a variety of looks without an overcrowded closet.
Toward the end of her undergraduate studies at Indiana University, Dombek-Keith realized that fashion can open doors to a more sustainable future. She feels strongly that fashion designers have a responsibility to reduce the apparel industry's use of resources and the impact on the earth of manufacture, transportation, and maintenance of clothing. Katie will be greeting the public at the opening reception of her show -- which runs now through May 13 -- on Friday, May 4, from 5 to 8 pm, during Gallery Night of Ithaca. She is also giving a gallery talk at CSMA at 3 pm on Sunday, May 6.
