Thanks for sharing Bill Evan's excellent letter, Gay. I hope he writes toThe Nation. Every time I hear what Bill has to say on this topic, I am reminded that we can't let the same simplistic, careless habits of thinking, and perhaps fearing, apply to measures we hope will steer us from our current destructive ways in this culture. If we don't look at and care about the entire spectrum of potential effects of our actions, then we will likely be doomed to substitute one myopic measure for the old one. Similar is the rush to biofuels that destroy rainforests, or cost more energy to produce than they yield. And when corporate capitalism takes hold of alternative energy, we may see some of the same arrogance it has exhibited regarding coal and oil, as Bill's point about the Mountaineer wind project in West Virginia illustrates.

Bill Evans, a noted bird researcher on this topic, posted this reply to the TREEA listserv. And then Greg Pitts added some points on tip speed of blades. Bill said it was okay to share with this listserv.
