SEWGREEN'S GIFT TO CAROLINE
More than a thousand reusable tote bags were completed by the sewing community
in Tompkins County and beyond, in collaboration with Energy Independent
Caroline. Sewing enthusiasts from beginners to experts, including Girl Scouts,
4H-ers, and a treadle machine user who zoomed through about 40 bags at a
sew-in, made this experiment in "anonymous generosity" a success. Thank you,
all you wonderful bag makers! Your bag, containing a compact fluorescent light
bulb and a small packet of literature, will soon be delivered to a household in
the town of Caroline. Volunteers from Cornell, IC, and the community will
distribute the bags on April 19. The project was made possible by a grant to
the Lighten Up Caroline organizers from Cornell and others. The Caroline Bag
project earned $1,010 for SewGreen programs. We in turn will contribute to the
Brooktondale Community Center, which hosted a sew-in, and to the Shopping Bag
Action Group for its work in raising awareness of the need to elim
 inate paper and plastic bags.

SEWGREEN VISION
SewGreen is an Ithaca-based not-for-profit program that encourages
sustainability in the use of fabric, fiber, and fashion. We promote reuse
through a fabric donation and resale program, the refurbishment of older sewing
machines, and reuse sewing projects. We are organizing a second series of
beginning sewing classes to inspire a rediscovery of sewing as a self-reliant,
sustainable skill. We do outreach to student groups and others on reuse and
responsible consumerism, and we have get-togethers to learn from each other and
enjoy the social aspect of sewing and needlecrafts. For more information:
