Arts, Music, and the Environment Meet at Earth Day Ithaca

ITHACA NY - This year's celebration of Earth Day in Ithaca brings together art,
music, and a love of the earth. In addition to the traditional afternoon of
exhibits and events at the Ithaca Farmers Market pavilion, Earth Day organizers
have added a masquerade ball, and a green arts symposium.

On Friday, April 25, a symposium on "Greening the Arts" will kick off the
weekend. Artists, educators, and others with an interest in blending
sustainability with artistic creativity are welcome. Local and national
speakers, including Lars Torres, director to the Global Peace Tiles Project,
will join symposium attendees in discussions leading to action plans. The
symposium will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at the Tompkins County Public
Library, and continues on Saturday. For information and to register, contact
Patricia Haines, [EMAIL PROTECTED], 607-339-9472.

Saturday's events include a costume and mask-making workshop that ties in with
Earth Day's theme of honoring all the earth's beings. Adults and families with
children are welcome to enjoy this free, informal workshop, held in the Holiday
Inn ballroom from noon to 4 pm. A separate free workshop to make Peace Tiles
will also be held at the Holiday Inn, from 2 - 4 pm. Peace Tiles offer a way to
express visions for children's lives around the world. More information is
available at http://mixedmedia.us/peacetiles/

Another new event this year is the Earth Huggers' Ball, 6:30 to 11 pm Saturday
night at the Holiday Inn ballroom. Adults, couples, and families are invited to
dress up as their "favorite Earthling," whether human, historic, animal,
vegetable, or other, and dance to the music of three bands. The Burns Sisters
will open the show, followed by The Native Earthling Band, and Rick Redington
and the Luv, who will travel here from Vermont to play on the solar-powered
stage. Ticket price includes hors d'oeuvres, face painting, and prize drawings.
An all-ages event, the ball benefits the Center for Environmental
Sustainability which sponsors Ithaca's annual Earth Day celebration.

On Sunday, Earth Day Ithaca will be held at the Farmer's Market Pavilion at
Steamboat Landing from noon to 5 pm. The afternoon features music, dance,
Master Composters compost fair, free cruises on the Cayuga Lake Floating
Classroom, a parade and activities for children, and exhibits by environmental
groups and vendors. The annual ecofashion show, featuring winning entries in
the Green T Reuse Design Contest, starts at 2 pm

Earth Day Ithaca is sponsored by the not-for-profit Center for Environmental
Sustainability. According to the coordinator Joey Diana Gates, a boost in
grants and donations has allowed the event to expand its scope and outreach.
