Hi Katie,

Ours still smells in summer, but if we leave the door ajar the smell
clears in seconds. So I would make a vent somewhere down low, maybe in
the door, closeable in winter. Along with the existing vent near the
roof, it will create a chimney effect, a permanent convection current
that will stop the smell. Also, I would find a better way of sealing fly
access to the drum than the caulk that eventually cracks, like in the
joints between the seat platform and the bottomless pail that I used to
connect the platform to the floor. Flies seem to get into the drum to
reproduce, through the smallest cracks. It's like all wood structures -
seasonal expansion and contraction opens cracks.

Otherwise we are happy with the design. Some city visitors have refused
to use it, afraid of getting bit by the monsters they are sure live down
the dark hole...
