Natural Gas Leasing Information Available on Extension Website
A newly updated, 10-page information sheet, "Gas Exploration and
Leasing on Private Land: Tips and Guidance for New York Landowners" is now
available as a PDF on the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension web site,
www.ccetompkins.org.
The information is provided to help New York land owners
understand the process of natural gas exploration and leasing. It outlines
what the gas resource is, how and why landowners are likely to be
contacted, how a gas lease works, and what to consider when making
decisions about gas leasing. Among the revisions are points specific to
Marcellus Shale exploration, NYS DEC options for uncontrolled parcels in
production units, and water quality concerns associated with
drilling. Although introductory in nature, the information sheet should
provide landowners with an overview of the issues involved.
In addition, a DVD of a workshop on Natural Gas Exploration and
Leasing held at CCE-Tompkins in 2007 is available for loan or purchase.
