Sustainable Tompkins Seeks Help to Spot “Signs of Sustainability”

Sustainable Tompkins, the organization devoted to catalyzing sustainable
development in our region, seeks your help to identify the newest “Signs
of Sustainability” in our community. For the past two years, Sustainable
Tompkins board members have kept their eyes and ears open throughout the
year to spot individuals and organizations helping to advance community
sustainability. The risk with this ad hoc approach is that a number of
worthy entities go unrecognized for their positive impact. This year,
Sustainable Tompkins is enlisting your help to make sure we are aware of
all the new “Signs of Sustainability” that joined the local movement in
2008.

Sustainable Tompkins seeks examples of individuals and entities whose
work during this past year has been supportive of our mission to promote
the long-term well-being of our communities and region by integrating
social equity, economic vitality, ecological stewardship, and personal
and civic responsibility. Each year, Sustainable Tompkins acknowledges
three categories of “Signs of Sustainability”:

*A new sustainable enterprise (that began business operations no earlier
than December 2007);
*A brand new program or non-profit organization supporting some aspect
of sustainable development (that began delivering services no earlier
than December 2007); or
*A new sustainable program element rolled out by an existing business or
non-profit organization (that has been offered no earlier than December
2007).

To nominate someone (and self-nominations are acceptable) as a

Sustainable Tompkins will publicly acknowledge each of the selected
“Signs of Sustainability” at our Holiday Party on Sunday, December 7th
starting at 5:00PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca. We will
invite the nominator and representatives of each of the entities that
the Sustainable Tompkins Board of Directors selects to be awarded a 2008
“Sign of Sustainability” to attend this celebratory event to be lauded
for their efforts and to receive an award certificate. In January, we
will also publish the names of all the awardees in a series of articles
in the “Signs of Sustainability” column in Tompkins Weekly.
Thanks in advance for your assistance. We look forward to acknowledging
all the newest “Signs of Sustainability” that point the way forward
toward a brighter, more sustainable future for us all in this region.
