Good point!!!  Why did I not think of it?  As a daily commuter by bike I sure
could make an argument for rebate for my bike too.  For $500 you could buy a
decent bike, not just a door or bumper on a hybrid car.

I certainly don't pump a 1 to 2 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere over Ithaca
for every mile I drive my bike.  The miserable bike rack equivalent of a
parking space in the new Green Street garage cost about $300 per bike, versus
about $40,000 for each car parking space in the garage.  (I think the utterly
redundent "BIKES" sign/sculpture must have cost as much as the bike rack and
surrounding concrete.)

A mile of state-of-the-art 2-lane bikepath, even in terrain such as around
Ithaca, costs one-tenth or less of the cost of a mile of highway, or about the
same as 60-70 parking spaces at the mall.

I want to see a rebate for people who promise to not buy a car. Then
we'd see more walking, more biking, more public transit, more
carpooling, more carsharing, more "vanpool", more trains, more
podcars,
etc. instead of perpetuating the happy motorist society that is causing
so many issues.

But that would be too easy right?
