Just out of curiosity, what percentage of Vietnamese have refrigeration today?
How does the increase in life expectancy correlate to rise in available
refrigeration?Pegi,We could not find any data on the percentage of Vietnamese
families that own refridgerators.Despite its ongoing integration into the
larger world economy getting economic data, muchless economic data in English,
is a real challenge. We did however find data for China and India. According to
data from '07 in China some22% of rural households, and 92% of urban households
own refridgerators. In India in 2005 about 4.4% of rural households and 31.9%
of urban households owned refridgerators.I suspect that Viet Nam is somewhere
in that ballpark, maybe closer to China than to India. In terms of per capita
income that country lags behind China, with a per capita income ofabout $1,000
in 2008 versus $1,255 for China.A new refridgerator in China costs about
$280.One scary bit of news that came out of this little exercise is that the
Chinese governmenthas instituted a program to give tax credits to rural
famillies who but refridgerators.The
goal of the new policy is to create new consumers for China's growing
manufacturingcapacity. They intend to travel down the same road to
unsustainability the US started downat the beginning of the 20th
Century. George Frantz
