CALL FOR ENTRIES: SewGreen is hosting a "creative reuse" gallery show of original and redesigned fashions; fabric and fiber art; and creative stitchery at the Community School of Music and Art, in downtown Ithaca, in the month of April, 2009, with an opening soiree and fashion show on April 3. Entries must be completely made or reconstructed from reused or existing materials. Items may be priced for sale but must remain in the gallery for the duration of the show. Contact Wendy, [email protected] for guidelines. SEWGREEN TEACHER TRAINING: Join our teaching team! SewGreen is offering free training in teaching sewing for kids, teens, and adults. Basic sewing skills are required but teaching experience is not necessary. Prospective teachers should enjoy working within a culture of sustainability and diversity. Teacher trainings will be held twice in January: 6 - 9pm, Wednesday Jan 14 and 21; repeated 1 - 4pm, Saturday Jan 24 and 31. Information and applications are posted on the SewGreen website, www.sew-green.org. SEWING LESSONS FOR KIDS: SewGreen is offering private and small-group lessons in beginning machine sewing to children 8 to 12, by appointment. We can also teach a parent and child together. Lessons can be scheduled after school or on Saturday mornings. E-mail Wendy, [email protected]. Include your child's age and what times/days of the week you prefer. Gift Certificates are available. A limited number of scholarships, based on economic need, are available. SUNDAY OPEN SEWS, 1 - 4PM The SewGreen classroom is open on the first and third Sunday of each month, for anyone who wants to bring in a project to work on, or make a volunteer project for SewGreen. No formal instruction; machines and supplies are available for your use. SewGreen classroom, Women's Community Building. We have a doorbell now! SEATTLE TEEN DONATES FASHION SHOW PROCEEDS SewGreen has heard from a high school student in Seattle WA, whose senior project is a show of recycled and reused fashions. She emailed us to say that she wants to donate the proceeds from the event's ticket sales to SewGreen. Thank you, Gillian from Seattle, for a remarkable gesture -- and one which seems to say: We need more SewGreens! CLASS ROSTER, JANUARY & FEBRUARY Unless other wise indicated, classes are for teens and adults. All classes are held at the SewGreen classroom, Women's Community Building, 100 W Seneca St, downtown Ithaca. Most single sessions are $15. Scholarships are available. Beginning Sewing I or equivalent is required. 6 - 8 pm, Tuesday Feb 3. ~~ Beginning Sewing II: as above. 6 - 8pm, Wednesday Feb 4. ~~ Teen Sewing Day: Sewing skills and projects for teens. 11am - 4pm, Friday Feb 6 (Ithaca schools day off). $25. ~~ FREE Make a Valentine Gift: Crafts workshop for all ages. 11am - 1pm, Saturday Feb 7. ~~ Meet Your Machine: Bring in your older sewing machine, in good working order, for an introduction to using and caring for it. 2 - 4pm, Saturday Feb 7. ~~ Mending & Alterations: Basic skills for keeping clothing in good repair and fit. 6 - 8pm, Monday Feb 9. ~~ Basic Scrap Quilting, two sessions: Learn skills for using fabric scraps in small quilting projects. Beginning Sewing I or equivalent is required. 6 - 8:30pm, Tuesday Feb 10 and 6 - 8:30pm, Tuesday Feb 17. $30. ~~ Crochet for Rug Makers: Learn to crochet a rug using fabric strips. 1 - 4 pm, Saturday Feb 14. ~~ Sewing with a Pattern, two sessions: Learn the basics of laying out and following a pattern. Beginning Sewing I or equivalent is required. 6 - 8:30pm, Wednesday, Feb 25 and Thursday, Feb 26. $30. ~~ Braided Rug Making: Learn a no-sew technique for making braided rugs from fabric strips. 1 - 4pm, Saturday Feb 28.
