short version re: my public policy-level recommendations on fracking:
1. natural gas is an important part of the transition away from fossil fuels, since it releases less heat-trapping gases at the point of combustion.
2. How it is extracted also needs to be considered, both in terms of its cradle to grave carbon footprint and its safety.
3. Bottom line: the caveats that "only if safely" extracted and "only if it has a worthwhile carbon budget" probably means it can't be done safely or ecologically with current industry practices.
ACTION PLAN: push for appropriate regulation and OVERSIGHT (funded by permits at every appropriate stage so industry pays for upfront costs upfront). Another email will give the short version of that aspect of public policy . . .
PS I love the statements which recently came form the Town of Dryden, where I now live.
