Cordyceps, matsutake and other treasures of Tibet: A mushrooming market

Daniel Winkler*

Wed March 10, 7PM
Plant Science Auditorium
233 Plant Science Bldg, Cornell University
reception to follow

The Tibetan people have a long history of harvesting wild mushrooms for food and medicine. Since the 1990s a lucrative export market has developed. For e.g., Cordyceps sinensis (the medicinal caterpillar fungus) can fetch up to $12,000 per pound; annual Tibetan harvests are now around 50 tons. The Japanese market for fresh wild mushrooms like matsutakes has also become an important economic force in rural Tibet. Impressive supply chains have developed around this new industry, changing the outlook of rural communities, and presenting new sustainability and conservation challenges associated with overharvesting. Daniel will take us on an entertaining and well-illustrated tour of Tibet, its mushrooms, and its culture, and discuss economic and conservation impacts of the mushroom industry there. Hope you can join us.

Host: Dr. Kathie Hodge <[email protected]> 607-255-5356
