More data - when I re-visit the iPublishCentral page with a fresh instance of IE8 - the page works, IE remembers that I toggled the 'compatibility' mode - although there is no visual change in the compatibility icon when it is toggled - if I untoggle it, I get the same error you described, and no swf . . .
