BBCWS shortwave for Caribbean to close on 23 March
March 17th, 2008 - 13:16 UTC by Andy
The BBCWS website carries the following announcement:
BBC World Service shortwave transmissions to the Caribbean will close on March
23rd 2008. Many listeners in the Caribbean and around the world no longer
listen via shortwave. Instead they are choosing to listen to the radio on other
platforms including FM, satellite and online. As a result, the BBC has invested
in new FM services to the Caribbean. BBC World Service programmes can now be
heard on FM 24 hours a day in Antigua, Trinidad and Jamaica as well as via
partner stations in almost all of the Caribbean islands.

Bad news for SW listeners in the Americas Not that I was expecting anything
good from BBC in terms of SW broadcasting…

FM is good, but if you don’t live within reach of the main 24h FM relays you
have to rely on restricted hours listening through partner stations(and there
will be some areas where FM reception is poor/patchy or non-existant). Also
what BBCWS seem to forget is that not everybody satellite and internet means to
listen either.

And BBC also plans to reduce SW coverage to East and SE Asia when the A08
schedule begins March 30–no more midday or late-night frequencies will be
available. This will also affect listeneres in Australia who depend on hearing
WS frequencies at other times of the day, not just the key morning and evening
times.
