I think that this "back order" thing is a method of gauging market interest before they stock any product.
If they advertise it on the website and take a few orders they know that they have at least as many buyers as orders placed. If they only take a few orders thus not making it a viable effort they can always refund monies (having sat on it in the bank for a few weeks) and claim the product is no longer available or some other rubbish.
