I think that without any evidence we need to be very careful about making such
accusations.  Unless someone knows or has evidence that CCrane does this, this
is nothing but speculation. 

I'm sure some companies do this, others might just order 5 of something and thus
end up "back-ordered" at item 6 but I'd tread carefully where reputations are
concerned.  Why not just ask CCrane what the situation is?

I think that this "back order" thing is a method of gauging market
interest before they stock any product.

If they advertise it on the website and take a few orders they know that
they have at least as many buyers as orders placed. If they only take a
few orders thus not making it a viable effort they can always refund
monies (having sat on it in the bank for a few weeks) and claim the
product is no longer available or some other rubbish.
