I don't own one of these critters myself, thus it's tough to say. >From what I know, the Clear Channel cluster offers some automated formats on their HD subchannels that aren't offered over the air.
Closer to Philly, WHYY and WRTI both have HD subchannels. WHYY's lone subchannel (HD2) has classical overnight (when the main service has BBCWS) and BBCWS during the day. WRTI's lone HD2 subchannel is the alter ego of its regular schedule -- jazz by day, classical by night. So, you're right..not much that is truly unique out there. I'll be honest with you...I still regard HD radio as a technology curiosity much like Digital Radio Mondiale. I have much more diversity available to me on shortwave and streaming audio than I do from HD radio. It might be fun to get an HD radio from a source having liberal return policies, try the radio for a week, see what's on, then take the radio back for a refund.
