Thanks for the update, Tom. This article says regarding IBM's plan-- "Their strategy is to sign up electric cooperatives that provide power to sparsely populated areas across the eastern United States. Rather than compete toe-to-toe with large, entrenched cable or DSL providers, IBEC is looking for customers that have been largely left out of the shift to high-speed Internet." If so, this puts them solely in the high cost, low customer density areas, with no lower cost, high density areas to help them offset the costs. Even with the supposedly lower hardware cost per mile of BPL, this is going to be a struggle for them to make the dollars work. Of course, it says that they are getting federal loans, so payback may not be a problem-- using tax money. It has been said that one of Obama's top priorities (one of his 5000 top priorities) is to increase high speed internet coverage in rural areas, but I doubt this is one of his inititatives since he's still a couple of month's away from actually being President. This seems to be an even less cost effective strategy than those previously proposed. But federal money now and the prospect of more federal money in the future may keep the Titanic floating for a while longer. So once again, we must be viligant and ready for action. Thanks again, Tom. 73, Curt Phillips W4CP Raleigh, NC USA
