I downloaded it with Firefox 3.6.25, though I could just as easily have used Chrome or IE.
I doubt that the browser makes any changes to what is within a binary file such as .gz I regularly download all sorts of things, and this has never happened before. I used 7-Zip to extract things locally. I could just as easily have used IZArc. I merely guessed that after the first extraction, the file bible.xml should have been bible.xml.tar After all, even a Windows user with many friends who are Linux users gets to know what sort of things to expect from that system.
