Professor Marilyn Friedman (Washington University) will present a paper entitled "³Justifying Terrorism: What Difference Does Gender Make?" Abstract: Does the meaning or moral assessment of suicide terrorism depend in any way on the gender of the terrorist? Is suicide terrorism morally worse, morally less bad, or even simply morally different when it is carried out by a woman rather than by a man? In this paper I consider these questions with reference to suicide terrorism by Palestinian women. First, I sketch out a strategy that I believe can be used to justify terrorism in general under certain sorts of conditions, if terrorism is ever justified at all. Second, I consider whether the suicide dimension of suicide terrorism adds to the moral wrongness of a terrorist act. Third, I explore some of the social and cultural conditions under which a number of Palestinian women have become or tried to become suicide terrorists for the Palestinian cause. Fourth, I discuss the additional meaning that is added to suicide terrorism under certain sorts of cultural conditions when the terrorist is female.
