Dear all,

The next Macquarie University Philosophy seminar will be held on Tuesday
October 9, 11am-1pm, in Room 107, W6A.

Dr Simon Lumsden (University of New South Wales) will present a paper
entitled "Hegel and the problem of the retrospective character of
reconciliation".

Abstract:
Hegel's project is often described as a project of reconciliation. This
reconciliation is most often presented as a historical achievement produced
by thought's self-correcting pathway. Modernity represents the highpoint of
this process since it is here that Spirit is said to be at home with itself,
that is, where freedom is realised. This paper argues that the negative role
of thought in this self-correcting movement undermines the claim that spirit
can be satisfied in modernity or in any social and political sphere.

All welcome - we look forward to seeing you there.
