Hi everyone,

The next Macquarie Philosophy seminar will be held on Tuesday
15 April , 11am-1pm, in Room 107, building W6A.

Catherine Legg from University of Waikato will present a paper:

"Making it Explicit and Clear: From 'Strong' to 'Hyper-'
Inferentialism in Brandom and Peirce"

Robert Brandom defends inferentialism, the claim that mental content is most
fundamentally analysed as inferential capacities rather than representations.
This paper asks how this new and original philosophical framework should be
positioned with respect to the broader pragmatist tradition. It is argued that
Charles Peirce's original attack (in "Questions Concerning Certain Faculties
Claimed for Man" and other early papers) on 'intuition' as a methodology in
nineteenth century philosophy of mind is a form of inferentialism, and an
antecedent to Brandom relatively unexplored by him in his 'tales of the mighty
dead'. An argument is mounted that Peirce shows the way for Brandom to work
his ideas through to a clearer and more radical form.

All are welcome
