16th April 2008 Dr. Cynthia Townley (Macquarie)

"What's Wrong with Betrayal?"

Abstract

Betrayal is commonly thought to be a violation of trust. Conversely, trust
is often characterised as that kind of dependence in which we are vulnerable
to betrayal, not just disappointment. I argue that taking betrayal to be a
violation of trust is not sufficient to define betrayal, nor to distinguish
trust from other kinds of commitment. An example taken from the film The
Lives of Others shows that betrayal can take place where trust is absent. I
also use the example to explore some recent claims about the nature of
loyalty.
