ETHICAL EXCELLENCE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR OF NSW

February 19-20, 2009

 

This conference is based on the theme of Ethical Excellence in the Public
Sector of NSW draws together institutional ethicists and experts on
corporate governance in the Australian public sector and business
environment. The conference is to be held over two days at the Citigate
Sebel Hotel in Surry Hills. For a complete line-up of presenters, including

Presenters:

Lorraine Carey: (TPTC, Vic College; BA, Monash; MDiv, Harvard; MBA, Monash;
PhD, U.C.) Lorraine is MBA Program Director at the University of Canberra
where she lectures in business ethics and organisational behaviour and is
the co-author of Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Management 3rd
edition (Oxford Southern Africa).

 

Stephen Cohen: Stephen coordinator of the ARC funded project Ethical
Excellence in the Public Sector of NSW. He is the Director of Graduate
Programs in Professional Ethics at the University of New South Wales. He is
author of The Nature of Moral Reasoning: The Framework and Activities of
Ethical Deliberation, Argument and Decision-Making (Oxford University Press,
2004) and co-author of Business Ethics: Problems and Cases, 3rd Edition
(OUP, 2005).

 

Don Hector: BE(CHEM),  PHD,  FICHEME,  FAICD is principal consultant at
Grassick SSG Pty Ltd, a specialist firm which advises boards and senior
management on strategy, sustainability, and governance.  Don's area of
expertise is strategy, sustainability and corporate governance.

 

Phil Lambert: Regional Director, Sydney, NSW Department of Education and
Training

Adjunct Associate Professor, University of Sydney. Phil has extensive
experience in education as a principal, inspector, policy director,
Assistant Director-General and Regional Director. 

 

Paul Mazerolle: Paul is Director of the Key Centre for Ethics, Law, Justice
and Governance and the Violence Research and Prevention Program at Griffith
University in Brisbane, Australia.  He is also Editor of the Australian and
New Zealand Journal of Criminology.  Prior administrative roles for Paul
have included Head of Criminology, University of Queensland, and Director of
Research and Prevention at the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC).

 

Bill Mitchell: Professor Bill Mitchell holds the Research Chair in Economics
and is the Director of the Centre of Full Employment and Equity (CofFEE), a
research centre at the University of Newcastle. He specialises in
macroeconomics, labour economics, and regional and urban economics, with a
particular focus on the study of employment and unemployment. He has
received regular research grant support from the Australian Research Council
and industry sources such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO),
the Asian Development Bank, the European Commission, many federal and state
departments in Australia, and several trade unions.

 

Christine Nixon: Christine is the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police and
chair of the CrimTrac Agency, the Australia and New Zealand Policing
Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) and the Australian Police Professional Standards
Council. She is also Co-Chair of the Australian Institute of Police
Management (AIPM), aboard member of the Australian Crime Commission and a
Member of the Senior Officer in Government since 2001.

 

Robert Oakeshott: Robert Oakeshott has been involved in both state and
federal politics for over 15 years.  As an Independent MP, he has a unique
perspective on political governance and ethics and by direct association,
public sector governance and ethics.  At a State level, Rob was a member of
the Public Accounts Committee that only last year reviewed public sector
governance within NSW and Australia and has regularly argued for greater
thinking and debate on a better values-based approach and ethical approach
within policy development and political processes. Rob has a Bachelor of
Arts (Honours), and Bachelor of Law.

 

Philip Quadrio: Philip is currently working as a researcher at the
University of NSW on the federally funded ARC project 'Ethical Excellence in
the Public Sector of NSW' and is affiliated with the 'Centre for Research on
Social Inclusion' at the Macquarie University. He has published a number of
papers on ethics, social theory and the intersection of religion with issues
in ethics, social theory and political theory. Most recently Philip was
involved in co-editing the book: Politics and Religion in the New Century:
Philosophical Perspectives (Sydney University Press, due February 2009). 

 

Peter Slezak: Peter Slezak is senior lecturer in the School of History and
Philosophy at the University of New South Wales. He is a member of the
US-based Cognitive Science Society and the Australasian Association of
Philosophy. He is currently completing a book titled 'Where Philosophy Goes
When It Dies' and another on the Responsibility of Intellectuals. He has
also produced an abridgement of several of Plato's dialogues as a theatre
production titled 'A Cock for Asclepius' and writes occasional opinion
pieces in the mainstream media.

 

Chris Wheeler: Chris Wheeler has been Deputy NSW Ombudsman since 1994.  He
has 25 years experience in complaint handling and investigations, as well as
extensive experience in management and public administration. Chris is a
member of the Research Team for the National Whistling While They Work
project, looking at ways to improve the management and protection of
internal witnesses.  Chris is also the Project Sponsor of the Dealing with
Unreasonable Complainant Conduct project currently being undertaken by the
eight Australian Parliamentary Ombudsman, looking at better ways to manage
unreasonable complainant conduct.

 

Ray Younis: Raymond A Younis is Associate Director (Academic) at CQU
(Sydney). He was educated at the University of Sydney (BA Hons MA Hons) and
the University of Oxford (DPhil). He has taught philosophy at Oxford, the
University of Sydney and Macquarie University, among others. His book, "On
the Ethical Life", will be published by Cambridge Scholars in 2009. He has
also published many papers in books and journals on ethics and applied
ethics and critical theory.
