Just a reminder that Professor Paul Griffiths (Department of
Philosophy, University of Sydney) will be giving a talk "Evolution -
Universal Acid?" on Wednesday 25th March, 6 - 8 pm in General Lecture
Theatre 205 in the Quadrangle Building at the University of Sydney.
Its easy to find - there'll be signs and people directing as well.
Entry is free for Russoc Members, $5 for Access Card holders
(membership is included with that) and $7 for Non Access Card holders.
We'll have food (pizza and drinks) after the talk.
Below is an abstract of the speech.
"Dan Dennett has described evolution as a "universal acid" which eats
away traditional beliefs. But how universal, and how acidic, is
evolutionary thought? Philosopher of religion Alvin Plantinga argues
that if our minds are devices designed by natural selection to
maximise our biological fitness, then we have no reasonable grounds
for supposing that any of our beliefs are actually true. Most
philosophers reject this argument. But they accept similar arguments
for specific kinds of beliefs. Some argue that evolutionary
explanations of religion debunk religion. Others argue that
evolutionary explanations of morality debunk morality. I evaluate the
merits of evolutionary scepticism about knowledge in general,
religion, and morality."
