USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar Nick Malpas - "Hannah Arendt and The Political Horizon of Being"
Monday 22nd of March, 3:30-5:00pm PLEASE NOTE THE SPECIAL VENUE FOR THIS WEEK'S SEMINAR: KEVIN LEE ROOM - Quadrangle Building, Level 6 (University of Sydney) Abstract: Hannah Arendt’s work contains an account of the ontological character of the political, which this paper examines along three axes. Firstly, the political is essential to human being. To be a conscious being with a distinct perspective on the world depends on speaking with others and this, in turn, is only possible within a political community. Secondly, the political is a necessary horizon for the appearance of any beings. Being itself, as appearance, depends upon the existence of a political realm in which people speech and act. Thirdly, political norms are not grounded in an ontological order but instead emerge as agreements from political speech and action. In this sense, the political is autonomous. This discussion will point the way towards the possibility of a political philosophy grounded in human plurality. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you would like to present or require further information, please contact Nick Malpas at [email protected] The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of discussion. Since the primary aim of this seminar is to generate discussion, presentations need not be particularly polished or formal.
