Come and do a PHD in Philosophy at Macquarie. *
The Department of Philosophy at Macquarie has a vibrant research culture,
committed to creative interaction between philosophical traditions. In
addition, there are close links with the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive
Science (MACS) and with the Australian School of Advanced Medicine (ASAM),
offering unique opportunities for inter-disciplinary research. We have an
excellent record in providing supervision and supporting candidates to
completion on time.

The Philosophy Department has an active research program encompassing three
broad areas of philosophy: Mind Metaphysics and Meaning; Social Philosophy
and Continental Philosophy; and Ethics and Ethical Theory, including
bioethics and clinical ethics. Opportunities for doctoral research are
available in all of these areas.

Postgraduate students in the Philosophy Department are provided with
excellent facilities and substantial support. Postgraduates and staff
interact regularly in seminars, reading groups, workshops and conferences.
There is an active mentoring process with assistance in preparing for an
academic career.

Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) for PhD
research are available for new PhD candidates in the Philosophy Department
at Macquarie University. These scholarships are open to Australian domestic
students who have first class honours or equivalent.

Information about applying for a PhD at Macquarie

There are two stages to the application process:

1. Finding a suitable project and supervisor. Look at the staff pages from
the Philosophy Department website to see our current areas of research, and
to work out if your proposed topic fits with the interests of any staff
member. If so, contact that person to find out whether they will be willing
to supervise you: http://www.phil.mq.edu.au/staff/index.html

2. Applying for admission to candidature and for a scholarship (it is the
same form for admission and scholarships). Information about applications is
