Utility vs. Choiceworthiness

ABSTRACT. It is plausible that a rational choice is one that maximizes some sort of expectation of some sort of value. Many theorists believe that the relevant sort of value is utility – where “utility” is understood as a measure of preference. Unfortunately, it is unclear what these theorists mean by “preferences”. However, on every interpretation that could possibly serve these theorists’ purposes, preferences – even the preferences of the most rational agent possible – do not meet the conditions that are required for them to be measureable by means of a utility function. This supports a rival conception of rational choice, according to which rational choices are those that maximize the expectation of a quite different sort of value – namely, a value that can be called “choiceworthiness”. Roughly, the view that rational choices maximize expected utility theory is a broadly Humean view, while the view that rational choices maximize expected choiceworthiness is a broadly Aristotelian view.
