Title: PG WIP Seminar: Matthew Hammerton
USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar
Matthew Hammerton - "Carnap’s argument for ontological anti-realism"
ABSTRACT: Ontological anti-realism says there are no objective answers to
ontological questions. Carnap’s “Empiricism, Semantics, Ontology” (1950) is
a locus classicus for this view. Many contemporary ontological
anti-realists explicitly identify their position with Carnap’s. In this
paper I will do two things. First, I will carefully examine the argument
of Carnap (1950) and suggest that it fails because it requires two
assumptions that most contemporary philosophers (including most ontological
anti-realists) would reject. Second, I will highlight a general problem
facing any argument for ontological anti-realism that has the same
structure as Carnap’s argument.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
