Dear All

Just a reminder that there will NOT be a presentation this Monday the
6th nor the 13th September in our HPS Research Series; our next talk
will be held on the 20th September:

David Gilad (University of Sydney)

" Goethe's Delicate Empiricism"

Husserl launched in his "The Crisis of European Sciences and
Transcendental Phenomenology" a strong criticism on the 'objectiveness'
of the European positivist sciences that he claims are responsible for
the crisis in the sciences in general, as well as in the European
Society. Husserl stressed that the positivists ignore the subjective
element of the Lebenswelt - the life - world. The Romantic mode of
science, which in the German lands of Goethe's era, was perceived as a
revolt against the objective, mechanical and reductionist natural
philosophy of the Enlightenment, was seeking an alternative subjective
and spiritual understanding of nature.

Goethe, who did not consider himself as a Romantic scientist, advanced a
science that attempted to overcome Husserl's criticism, as if he was
trying to advance the cure to the illness. This science that he termed,
"delicate empiricism", brought back the subject and his life into the
realm of knowledge. He blurred the Cartesian distinction between the
'inner experience', which is the realm of the emotional and mental (the
psyche), and the 'external experience', which is the realm of the
objective things. The realm of the psyche can never be mathmatised and
this is why a broader notion of science is required, one that will
include the humanistic aspect of knowledge.

To be held as usual:
