Modularity in Engineering and Biology
The concept of modularity has a prominent place in the field of
evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo), in particular, as a means of
making organisms evolvable. Much like the concept of modularity in the
cognitive sciences, however, modularity in evo-devo can be understood in a
variety of ways. In this paper, I look to engineering to help pull apart
and clarify some of these different conceptions. I begin by sketching an
important (but largely unnoticed) connection between engineering and
evo-devo, and then look at two distinct advantages modularity might provide
to an engineering project. I show that both these advantages are mentioned
in the biological discussion, but fail to be distinguished. I then examine
some ways that the distinction might be usefully applied.
