Peter Bowden will present a version of his paper, "The Failure of the Dialectic (?)", which was originally delivered at the APA conference. He writes: "We are all familiar with the dominant role of argument -- of dialectic discussion -- in philosophical discourse. This talk asks whether this dominance is leading us down the garden path. Whether it is time that we stopped arguing, at least in ethical developments, and introduced practices -- into the classroom and the workforce -- that have been proven, empirically, to reduce unethical behaviour. The structure, and title, has been changed from the APA paper, but the talk still contains many of the earlier arguments." *** 6.30pm, Wednesday 10 November 2010 (every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month) We'll start just after 6.30pm, and continue till 8pm-8.30pm. Format is usually: short speech, then two or three rounds of discussion, with breaks in-between. Often we'll go to dinner afterwards. Participants are welcome to come or to leave at any point during the evening. Incidentally, anyone is welcome to present on any topic related to philosophy (just let me know, and I'll book you in). No cost. No reading required beforehand. All welcome! Location: members bar, floor 1 (keep winding up to the top of the stairs), The Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, Sydney (100 metres from a Central railway station exit). We'll be armed with the Oxford Companion to Philosophy and a bell. Usually we meet ***out on the terrace*** (or ask at the bar if you're not sure). Usually a small group -- half a dozen to a dozen people sitting in a circle. Hope to see you there!
Adrian
