As a scientist, I am frustrated with the time it takes to distill review articles into evidence for and against theories. As a citizen, I am perennially dismayed by the triumphs of rhetoric over rational analysis and reasons in forming public policy. As a teacher of scientific psychology, I seek ways to help students think critically about theories and empirical issues. Hal Pashler and I have created a website called EvidenceChart (www.evidencechart.org) to help students, scientists, and citizens consider the evidence for and against a proposition. An evidence chart is essentially a table, with each column representing a theory or hypothesis, and each row representing a piece of evidence. In the interior of the table, where a theory and a piece of evidence meet, the author indicates whether the corresponding piece of evidence supports or undermines the corresponding theory, and why. The website provides additional functionality to organise the material, facilitate contrarian thinking, assist teachers preparing students to write an essay, and help scientists review evidence.
