Part-time position available for helping with scientific communication
and debate online tool
We (Hal Pashler, UCSD, and Alex Holcombe, USyd, [email protected]
) are developing web-based software to help people interested in a
scientific question compactly represent and inspect the various
competing hypotheses and the evidence which supports or fails to
support each hypothesis. (It is our sense that when people use prose
writing, and rebuttals and counterrebuttals, it does not lead to
clarity regarding what evidence is most critical.) Our software
(available at www.evidencechart.com) has been developed and tested in
informal ways, and now we want to get experts involved in some real
scientific debates to try it out and see if it is useful to debaters
and to interested onlookers.
We are hoping to hire someone who is interested in scientific debate
to oversee the implementation of some real debates. The person
doesn't have to be a software developer (we have one of those), but
savvy with using different web technologies would be a plus. Clear
communication and diplomatic skills will be essential in working with
scientists using the software. Initial tasks will include writing
documentation to guide real users in using the system, while
considering how rules for scientific debating should be structured.
We'd like to hire someone for six months at about 10-15 hours per
week, to start. The project could also potentially lead to
publications, although our focus is more on seeing if we can make the
software really useful to people engaged in real debates. A
philosophy PhD student interested in the practice of science might be
perfect for this project. The project is currently funded by National
Science Foundation (USA) funds.
