'An Analysis of Conditional Concepts'
Abstract: It has recently been proposed that our phenomenal concepts are
conditional in the sense that what they pick out depends on what exists in
the actual world. Advocates of this sort of conditional analysis argue that
not only does it provide us with the correct analysis of phenomenal
concepts but that it also explains how the zombie intuition is compatible
with physicalism. These claims have been defended elsewhere. However, what
remain unaddressed are questions that arise as to the nature of conditional
concepts in general. For instance; what exactly is it for a concept to be
conditional? Which concepts are conditional? What is the relationship
between the conditional analysis and two-dimensional semantics? What does
the analysis tell us, if anything, about epistemic and metaphysical space?
In this paper, I attempt to give an analysis of the conditional analysis of
concepts itself with the aim of addressing such questions.
