Symposium Announcement: Crossing Borders: Mental Health and the  Experience of 
Seeking Asylum, Friday, 14th of February


        The Centre for Faith, Ethics and Society  at the University of Notre 
Dame Australia.


         The Symposium will explore the mental-health issues associated with 
the process of seeking asylum and consider ways in which Australians might 
respond compassionately and reasonably to the plight of Australia’s asylum 
seekers.

       It promises to be a stimulating day with contributions from dynamic and 
inspiring speakers, including:


·         Barrister and human rights advocate Gillian Triggs (President of the 
Australian Human Rights Commission)

·         Mental-health expert Beverley Raphael (Professor of Population Mental 
Health and Disasters at UWS)

·         Scientist and clinician Suresh Sundram (Florey Institute of 
Neuroscience and Mental Health)

·         Acclaimed novelist Arnold Zable (University of Melbourne)

·         Post-traumatic stress specialist Richard Bryant (Director of the 
Traumatic Stress Clinic at Westmead Millennium Institute)

·         Najeeba Wazefadost, a young Afghan refugee who came to  Australia by 
boat with her family in 2000.
