Speaking of propel. I would prefer moving to Doctrine as the default as 
I rather want an ORM that knows what a join is without having to teach 
it myself ;)

PS: Just because I am the one posting to this list the most, does not 
mean that I think Symfony is bad .. I just see some room for 
improvements, but I think (aside from the CS) its the best foundation to 
improve from.
