yes, wflynny, now that it is clear how this should work it would be worth  
to rewrite
this (see also issue 1520).

I initially thought it should not be that difficult to sequentially collect  
the
symbols, but that approach did not work, so just ignore my comments and go  
ahead and
do it your way :-)
