imho the open interval patch you refer to could be simpler. I'm attaching a  
patch to
illustrate what I mean ..

For set unions I would propose using simple lists of intervals and points.  
It doesn't
seem likely that sympy will need to deal with more complicated (1D) sets,  
and using a
list has distinct advantages. One of these is that even trying to solve
function equalities may result in interval results, for example when  
piecewise
functions are involved. It would then be advantageous to be able to include  
such
intervals in the results list.
