Yes, z = symbols('z', complex=True, negative=False) is definitely wrong. I think it is a separate issue, though.

And most likely, the actual issue is in is_numer_denom(), as Mateusz pointed out. cancel() must be calling that. I meant that cancel() is the first function being called in simplify() creates the problem (and not, for example,
powsimp(), as I originally thought it might be).
