The problem with defining addition componentwise is that you'd expect (1 + X) * Y = Y + X*Y.

Why? It's clear in Python that 1 cannot be the unity matrix, so I wouldn't expect distributivity here.

Even if it was misleading, it would be consistent with numpy.
